A cozy, flavorful pear butter made by simmering ripe pears with warm spices like cinnamon, fresh ginger, and nutmeg. Perfect as a spread or topping, with a bright and warm spice profile.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4–5 ripe pears
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger slice or grated (or 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger as substitute)
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and dice 4-5 ripe pears into bite-size pieces.
  2. Place the diced pears in a medium saucepan and add lemon juice, maple syrup, brown sugar, cinnamon, fresh ginger, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Heat over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, and bring to a gentle boil.
  4. Reduce heat to medium-low, keep lid slightly ajar, and simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pears soften and the mixture thickens.
  5. Remove and discard the fresh ginger slice.
  6. Blend the mixture with an immersion blender until smooth, or mash by hand for chunkier texture.
  7. Return to medium-low heat and simmer another 10 minutes to thicken.
  8. Let the pear butter cool slightly, then spoon into clean jars and seal tightly. Refrigerate and enjoy within two weeks.

Notes

Use ripe but firm pear varieties like Anjou, Bosc, or Bartlett for best texture and flavor., Fresh grated ginger is preferred over ground ginger for a brighter note., Adjust sweetness with more maple syrup or brown sugar if pears are tart., To store longer, freeze in freezer-safe containers for up to 3 months and thaw in fridge., Blending hot mixtures can splatter; cool slightly or blend in small batches with lid vented., Recipe can be doubled with larger pan and careful stirring., Variations include adding vanilla extract, spices like cloves or cardamom, or mixing apples and pears.
