Notes

For best results, a mix of Honeycrisp and Granny Smith apples can be used to balance sweetness and tartness., Swap walnuts with pecans for a similar crunch or omit for nut-free version., Butter can substitute oil for richer flavor though oil provides more moisture., Sugar can be halved and all-purpose flour replaced with whole wheat for a healthier variation., The cake batter can be baked as cupcakes for 20-25 minutes., Leftovers keep well at room temperature for 3 days and refrigerated for up to a week., Freeze wrapped cake for up to 3 months; thaw overnight in fridge before serving., Reheat slices gently in microwave or oven, allowing chilled cake to reach room temperature for best frosting texture., Alternative frostings: brown sugar buttercream or powdered sugar glaze.
