An easy and quick appetizer with crisp slices of sharp cheddar cheese and fresh Granny Smith apple layered on toasted baguette slices, finished with a drizzle of honey, flaky sea salt, and fresh herbs for a sweet and savory flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 baguette (French style works great)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 Granny Smith green apple
  • 1 7 oz block of sharp white cheddar
  • Honey for drizzling
  • Flaky sea salt for sprinkling
  • Fresh thyme for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the baguette into 1/4–1/2 inch slices.
  2. Brush or spray the top of each bread slice with olive oil.
  3. Oven method: Preheat oven to 400°F. Arrange oiled slices in a single layer on a foil-lined sheet pan; bake up to 10 minutes, checking every 5 minutes until golden and crisp.
  4. Stovetop/grill-pan method: Heat a grill pan over medium heat. Toast oiled slices cut side down, flipping as needed, about 3–5 minutes per side, until browned and crisp.
  5. Air-fryer method: Preheat air fryer to 400°F. Arrange slices in a single layer without crowding. Air fry in 3-5 minute bursts until crisp and golden.
  6. While the bread toasts, thinly slice the sharp white cheddar so it fits each crostini.
  7. Core and thinly slice the Granny Smith apple (leave the skin on). Optionally toss slices in lemon juice or cold water to prevent browning.
  8. For cold crostini: Let toasted bread cool slightly or completely.
  9. Top each cooled crostini with a slice of cheddar and one or two apple slices.
  10. Drizzle honey over each crostini and sprinkle with flaky sea salt and fresh thyme leaves.
  11. For warm/melty crostini: Place a slice of cheddar on warm crostini and return to the oven at 400°F for 1–3 minutes, until the cheese softens and just starts to melt.
  12. After melting the cheese, add apple slices, drizzle with honey, and finish with flaky sea salt and thyme.
  13. Serve the assembled crostini immediately.

Notes

Use sharp white cheddar for best flavor and melting qualities., To prevent apple slices from browning, toss them briefly in lemon juice or keep submerged in cold water with lemon juice., The recipe is flexible for substitutions such as different cheeses (goat cheese, brie, blue cheese), fruits (pear, figs), and add-ons (prosciutto, nuts, fig jam, grainy mustard)., For gluten-free or vegan variations, use gluten-free baguette and dairy-free cheese., Store toasted bread and toppings separately to keep crostini crisp; best eaten soon after assembly., Reheat assembled crostini in oven or air fryer to maintain texture; avoid microwaving.
